The Moon in Astrology

A tender part of our Astrological biography, the Moon governs feelings, emotions, your past (and how you feel about it), and sensory connections to emotions. Vulnerabilities, how we reveal ourselves, and early memories are all related to our Moon placement. The Moon speaks to our style of emotional expression, self-awareness, and self-acceptance. Our subconscious processes come from the Moon, so this placement tends to be private. However, House Placement and Aspects will influence our Moon’s expressions.

Pulling heavily on our past experiences, the Moon is ruled by Cancer and governs the Fourth House. The Moon represents our capacity for emotional attachment--and detachment. Our Moon sign (and any Aspects to it) will articulate what’s healthy and appropriate around boundaries. The Moon is related to nurturing, incubation, fertility, children, and childhood. Feelings of nostalgia can often be attributed to the Moon. It’s an excellent indicator of our emotional compatibility with others.

One area of the Moon I find fascinating is its association with hunger and nourishment. I have discussed with several clients how a difficult Moon placement corresponds with food struggles, whether that be dissociative, restrictive, or binge eating. The Moon is cyclical and represents changes and processes. At times, the Moon is empty or New (this is the case when it’s closest to the zodiac sign of the Solar season), and at others, it’s Full (when it’s furthest from the zodiac sign of the Solar season). We experience at least one (sometimes two) New and Full Moon monthly, so it’s quite approachable for even Astrology beginners to track Lunar cycles.

Largely corresponding to our instinctive responses, the true nature of our Moon sign will only be revealed to those we are closest to. The Moon is very intimate, and those who have childhood traumas predictably have challenging Lunar Aspects.
