The Sun in Astrology
In Astrology, the Sun represents our vitality, our true self, and the parts of us we want seen and validated. For most people, the first Astrological awareness they have is their Sun sign. There’s a 30-day period where individuals can be born with their Sun in a single zodiac sign. The Astrological calendar begins with Aries, though the Sun is associated with Leo and the Fifth House.
The Sun constitutes our identity. If your Sun is in an Aspect with other planets in your birth chart, the basic identities will evolve and become influenced by those other planetary energies. One of my favorite modern Astrology resources, Jessica Lanyadoo’s Astrology for Real Relationships, exemplifies a Leo Sun: the typical outward self-expression of a Leo Sun could be drastically changed by an Opposition to Saturn in Aquarius (common for millennials) or a Square to a Taurus Mars (Robert Di Nero and Jourdan Dunn have this Aspect).
In our birth chart, the Sun sign represents our will and the parts of our personality we seek out and prioritize. When our Sun sign is repressed, whether that be through some sort of people-pleasing, trauma, or inauthentic lifestyle, it shapes the ways we act out. The challenge is that our Sun sign only expresses its highest potential in a safe, stable environment, and not all of us are afforded that privilege.
As the core of our fundamental nature, the Sun shapes our ego. It is also our conscious self. Though Sun sign Astrology is plentiful, it’s still valuable to spend time with your Sun sign in an Astrology practice. Particularly during New and Full Moons if they engage your Sun sign, or when outer planets form a once-in-a-lifetime Aspect.
Health Astrology depicts the Sun as ruling the heart, spine and well-being.
