Unconscious Versus Subconscious in Astrology

Applying what we’ve learned, versus inherent knowledge.

When it comes to the unconscious and subconscious minds, we’re actually talking about two very different things. The phenomena of the unconscious mind refer to a process in which we’ve directly downloaded information; it’s automatic and uncontrollable. On the other hand, the subconscious mind applies lessons and consequences to situations based on past experiences. Our conscious mind works while we’re actively engaged.

A Brief Introduction to Unconscious Theories

Unconscious processes refer to the knowledge, intuition, feelings, sensations, or even Psi, that people experience. These are often unexplainable, difficult to quantify, only understood through quantum theory.

Many cognitive psychologists have and do claim this to be the “shadow side” of our conscious mind. The first use of the term “unconscious” (literally meaning the opposite of conscious) was in the early 1800s. It referenced hypnotically-induced behavior that the hypnotized subjects couldn't explain. Because their behavior couldn’t be explained, it was believed to be in some way accidental or without purpose. Equating the unconscious with “unintentional” has kept unconscious research in a figurative box. One question continues to baffle researchers:

If these processes aren’t purposeful, then why are available to us at all?

The Unconscious Mind in Astrology

Many astrologers look to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune for clues into our unconscious processes. You may have noticed these are the outer or generational planets, as opposed to the personal planets. This makes sense when we consider the meanings of each planet — which you can find on my Instagram profile!

When we consider the boundaries, fantasies, rebellion, expansion our souls call to, and require in this lifetime, we’re beckoning our past-lived experiences for unconscious guidance. Often, we even look to the experiences of the elder generation for insight on what we “should” do. We’ve inherited so much knowledge and data from our ancestors, most of which lives within our DNA. We desire to tap into our inherited wisdom in some way.

As we get older and begin to mature, our value systems take on new expressions. While society often applies pressure for formality and conformity, healthy minds and egos eventually learn to follow their own path.

A Brief Description of Your Subconscious Mind

Our conscious mind becomes activated when we are in the process of learning. Once we have learned something new, this data becomes “stored” in our subconscious mind.

As we source memories and experiences to make choices, we rely on our subconscious mind to do a lot of the mental work for us. And so it does. More often than not, our decisions are made in the subconscious space — which interestingly also rules over our dreams and dreamscape. This explains why we so frequently “work out” difficult situations or emotions while we sleep. It’s also why that “inner voice” is so influential to us.

Astrology’s Interpretation of Subconscious Processes

In astrology, we look to Mercury and the Moon for the representation of our subconscious mind. The Moon is often known as “the Mother” or the “nurturing” side of our life. Additionally, Mercury (which rules communication and ideas) qualifies our thought patterns and how we express ourselves. Whether that be verbal, written, sung, or shouted. Bringing awareness to our subconscious processes of our mind is the first step to healing the spirit. Clearing out harmful thoughts, behaviors, and coping mechanisms is certainly required.

When we consider how we were or were not nurtured in our youth, we can begin to understand the foundation for which we think for, and talk to, ourselves. Reclaiming this aspect of our mental processes can bring forth great healing, but also a great deal of pressure and revelation. Owning the capabilities of our minds is powerful.

Tips for Using Astrology To Heal

First things first, create a birth chart for yourself or download an app that will create it for you. I have a few resources available in this blog post. Look at which signs your Moon and Mercury are placed, and in which house. You can learn about what the house meanings are in this blog, and also this one. Additionally, look at which houses your Neptune, Saturn, Uranus, and Jupiter fall into.

If you find, for example, that your Moon falls into Aquarius and Mercury in Libra (like me!) you may have a sense of detachment from emotions, but a tremendous need to connect through verbal communication. My work has been understanding why I detach from emotions, focusing on pleasing others with my words. Owning which parts of these subconscious processes don’t serve me has been both gratifying and hard.

On top of that, my Neptune and Uranus in Capricorn, with Saturn in Aquarius and Jupiter in Virgo, demand evolution. Cardinal and Fixed energies rule my chart, with Mutable qualities sprinkled throughout. This means themes around beginnings and holding fast will play out in my unconscious processes.
